The core difference

A reach truck is a narrow-aisle electric machine with a mast that extends forward to reach into racking, operated from a stand-in cab. A counterbalanced forklift is a sit-down vehicle that uses a rear counterweight rather than a reaching mast, travels faster, carries heavier loads, and needs a wider aisle to turn and place a pallet. Both put pallets onto racking — they just solve the problem from opposite directions.

The reach truck wins on density: the reach mechanism and absence of a heavy counterweight let it work tight to the rack in narrow aisles, and it tends to lift higher. Aisle width: where reach trucks win

This is the single biggest reason reach trucks exist. A reach truck typically operates in aisles of roughly 2.5–3.0 m, because the extending mast lets it stay tight to the racking and it carries no rear counterweight swinging out behind it. A counterbalanced forklift typically needs 3.5–4.5 m to turn and place a load, and many facilities run wider to give operators margin.

That difference translates directly into stored pallets. Narrower aisles mean more racking rows in the same footprint — often 20–30% more storage density in a high-bay warehouse. If your loads are heavy and your storage is low-to-mid height, the forklift's speed and capacity make it the more productive machine. If your loads are moderate and your racking is tall and tightly spaced, the reach truck is purpose-built for it.

Match the machine to the constraint that's fixed. Building already built with narrow aisles and tall racking? That points to a reach truck. Heavy loads, mixed dock and yard work, wide aisles? That points to a forklift. The fixed constraint usually decides before budget does.

Both machines require certified operators.
